THINK. Five letters…not much really, but it says it all with regards to decision making in the construction field…THINK! We work in an environment that is often rich in hazards of both health and safety and we make decisions often minute by minute that dictate whether or not we will thrive and survive or be on the receiving end of an ambulance trip. No one leaves home wanting or expecting an accident but they do happen and it’s not only to the other guy. We all face that moment when our experience tells us “this is not safe” we know intuitively that we should step back, take a deep breath and THINK! The pressures around us to “get er’ done” are often immeasurable and yet we have to maintain our cool and think things through despite what’s going on around us in the workplace. This is a daunting task but here is an exercise that you might want to try. The next time that you are faced with a decision regarding your safety at work, picture your family in your mind’s eye. Your wife/husband, your kids. What would they do if you went home injured unable to support them any longer…what would they do if you didn’t go home at all?............................................................THINK! |
